Voltaire

Hey everyone. I really enjoyed this quote from Voltaire regarding his significance in writing history: “What is my role in all this? Only that of a painter who tries, with a weak but truthful brush, to show men as they were.” (Stern, 38)

His quote reminds me a lot of Van Gogh the painter. He was criticized often for the “crudeness” in which he painted (dirty miners, peasants, etc.) and too sought to “show men as they were.”

  1. It is true that Van Gogh was criticized but however in our society we mostly are not observing enough. I remember taking an Art History class on modern art. One day we did a two-hour case study on Van Gogh and his life. In away people just do not know the story behind, which is why I am glad to be a historian because as Nikita Khrushchev said “Historians are dangerous people. They are capable of upsetting everything.” ~~Nikolay Zherebnenkov
